Who can you ask how safe and good any area is if a realtor recommends a home in certain area? This is San Francisco bay area. How to determine whether an area is good for buying home?
Most realtors are not going to be honest with you in that regard. I had a realtor tell me that one neighborhood was safe, and there was a drug deal happening on the corner in broad daylight.
You can drive around the neighborhood at different times to see if there is any suspicious activity.
If you see bars on windows and doors of all the houses, that is a clue right there.
You can call the police station and ask about crime rates. How to determine whether an area is good for buying home?
Consult [the areas'] COUNCIL OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT, or contact the area's SCHOOL DISTRICTS, or even the region's B.B.B.
You might even ';get an insight'; by contacting the areas' neighbors, if you can make any contacts before deciding.
*GOOD LUCK and much HAPPINESS!
go to that neighborhood late at night to see if thugs walking the street. Check for prostitutes possible drug selling.
Also if the local gas station has steel bars over windows might be a bad sign
The police
First, I would contact the local area police department and make certain that crime in the area is not bad. Ask to speak with the beat officers of the street which you are considering purchasing the house. Additionally, look for obvious signs like neighbors that won't paint or keep up with maintenance. You may also want to drive in the neighborhood at different times of the day, check the surrounding neighborhoods and look for any problem signs. Make sure the agent provides you with a list of recently sold houses or check with public records. You may also want to get an abbreviated appraisal prior to writing a contract to help determine value. Also, check with the state police to see if there are any registered sex offenders living close to you.
You can ask the Chamber of Commerce to send you literature. It will describe the population, the success of the schools, possibly the crime rate, shopping, the job market, etc.
Always look at a neighborhood (after you've seen it during the day with the Realtor) at night. Some place that looks lovely in the daytime, may be crawling with vermin at night.
Do some research or contact a realtor. Is the best way to do it, if you are seriously thinking about buying a home having a Real Estate agent is a must. Another source is also asking people has lived in the State/Area for quite a while. They usually know good and bad neighborhoods.
Good Luck!
